BRAMS History

BRAMS was established in four rooms of the St John of God Convent building on Barker Street in Broome in 1978.

BRAMS survived on donations from West German Council of Churches, Brot fur die Welt (Bread for the World Program), Lions Australia, Australian Catholic Relief and Freedom from Hunger.

Congress from Alice Springs was also instrumental in the setting up of BRAMS.

When BRAMS was established, it was:

  • The first remote Aboriginal Medical Service in WA
  • Controlled by local Aboriginal people
  • Guided by a basic philosophy in line with the World Health Organisation
  • Modelled on the service set up in Redfern Aboriginal Health Service
  • Designed to provide a culturally holistic model of health care
  • A training school for Aboriginal Health Workers
  • Supporting the Milliya Rumurra alcohol rehabilitation centre
  • Providing an outreach medical service to Beagle Bay & La Grange, also known as Bidyadanga Communities
  • Treating an average of 30 patients per day at the convent
