🙌🙌🙌Today is International Day of the Midwife so we are celebrating all the amazing midwives around regional and remote Western Australia including this year's winner of the 2021 Rural Heath Awards Winner in the Rural Nurse/ Midwife of the Year category - Tamsen Prunster of the Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service.

Tamsen has been supporting Aboriginal women and their babies at Broome Regional Aboriginal Medical Service for more than 15 years and was recently instrumental in the establishment of the Family Centre at BRAMS.

The Centre provides a safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children to access health checks, antenatal and postnatal care, and child health services.

She also provides support to midwives located in other remote communities, and her close working relationships with hospital midwives and obstetric consultants has driven better communication and enhanced patient care.

Tamsen who took out two awards at the recent 2021 Rural Health Awards said she was excited and humbled to be recognised and dedicated the awards to her Mother Dasee Gugeri who was a school health nurse and Midwife in Derby for over 20 years.

“Sitting around the table at the awards night, there were so many amazing clinicians from Broome who were so deserving,” she said.
“An open Midwife can be the person women can convey their wishes and confide their fears.
“I think working with Aboriginal health workers and staff makes my days special.
“Community Midwifery can be so rewarding, getting to know families and the community.”

Tamsen said she wished all the brilliant, hard-working midwives who are supporting women and their families a Happy International Midwife Day.

Happy International Day of the Midwife to you all, thank you for all you do for us 🙌🙌🙌
